Things to do in Dunoon in Winter

The town of Dunoon offers so much to do – even outside of the sunny season. It’s the largest town in Argyll, located on the west shore of the Firth of Clyde. The ferry goes back and forth across the Clyde between here and Gourock – you may well take the car ferry on the way to stay with us.

If you’re staying with us at Hunters Quay or down the road at Stratheck, take a look at our pick of ways to fill your days in our winter guide to Dunoon.

Dunoon

Explore a Rich History

Whether ruined or well-preserved, ancient Scottish castles hold even more mystery and intrigue in the winter. There’s not too much remaining of 13th century Dunoon Castle, but it’s worth the climb to the top of the hill for the great views across the bay and to see the statue of ‘Highland Mary’, the lover of Robert Burns. Castle House Museum gives a glimpse into Dunoon’s past from the Neolithic era to Clyde steamers and the Cold war.

Dunoon is home to two historic lighthouses too: Toward Point Lighthouse and Cloch Lighthouse - they make for great snaps!
Take a short drive north to historic Kilmun, one of the earliest Scottish settlements. Its ancient church and mausoleum are truly fascinating. You can also follow a forest trail from here to Kilmun Arboretum.

Glens and Gardens

While Dunoon’s two beaches might be a bit blustery for a seaside stroll in the middle of winter, there are lots of wonderful wintry walks awaiting you at nearby beauty spots. Bishop’s Glen (aka Dunoon Reservoir) makes a great family-friendly walk as the main path around it is mostly flat, though there are more adventurous routes higher up. Argyll Forest Park is right on your doorstep from Hunters Quay or Stratheck, with gems to discover like the magical Puck’s Glen and Benmore Botanic Gardens. All of these are breath-taking even in the winter, so make sure you pack your winter warmers and your walking boots when exploring Dunoon this winter.

Art & Culture

Dunoon Burgh Hall is well worth a visit. This wonderful old building is home to an art gallery and café plus regularly hosts events from food and film festivals to music and theatre. Make sure you take a peek at their online calendar to see what’s on during your stay with us. You can also check out the handiwork of local artists at Fynewood Gallery. If you prefer to get a little more hands-on, we recommend the pottery workshops and taster sessions over at Seadrift Pottery – it makes a messy but fun group activity! If weather is particularly dreich, catch a film at independent Studio Cinema Dunoon, where you will be able to receive an exclusive discount during your stay with us.
